About Spencer

Spencer reporting at the 2024 IIHF Women's World Championship at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, N.Y. (April, 2024)

Spencer is a versatile, award-winning sports multimedia journalist and personality who has proudly built nearly ten years of extensive experience across multiple formats including live television, sports talk radio, print, digital, and social media.

He currently serves as the Sports Director at WKTV NEWSChannel 2 – the NBC/CBS television affiliate – in his hometown of Utica, N.Y. He has held this position since 2015, eagerly sharing the stories of teams and athletes in the area that helped foster his love of sports growing up. He previously served as weekend sports anchor and Digital Media Producer at WKTV.

Some of his best memories have come from being on the ice in Utica and watching his own highlights on WKTV, especially those of his high school team’s state championship victory in 2009. Now, he aims to add that element to memories for other athletes he has the privilege to cover, understanding the importance in his own life.

Spencer graduated from Hofstra University on Long Island in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism, and a minor in Political Science.

In his career, he has had the opportunity to cover some of the biggest events in sports, ranging from the local level to the international stage.

He has had the pleasure of speaking with athletes from all over the sports spectrum. Whether it be a youth basketball free throw national champion or Derek Jeter on Induction Day into the Baseball Hall of Fame – from his backyard of Cooperstown – Spencer has told their stories, and those of everyone in between.

Spencer is well-equipped in various forms of sports media, holding many different roles as a sports anchor, sports reporter, sports talk host, play-by-play broadcaster, and color commentator.

His work on WKTV earned him the Excellence in Broadcasting Award for “Outstanding Sportscast” from the New York State Broadcasters Association.

New York City born, Spencer is a fanatic for the New York sports teams, sometimes to his detriment. However, a sports fan in general, he puts his rooting interest aside to give each story the moment it deserves (even if it sometimes hurts to do so).

It’s been quite the journey from announcing imaginary Rangers’ games from the back seat of his parents’ car during trips as a kid to where he is now, but Spencer is excited to continue down this road, utilizing his skills to share his passion for sports — especially hockey.

He looks forward to the many more stories to tell and moments to come!
